Latisse for eyelashes - how to use and what effect

The history of the drug Latisse began in the 1930s. Then bimatoprost began to be used to treat eye diseases. In the 2000s, the American pharmaceutical corporation Allergan (known throughout the world for Botox, Surgiderm and Juvederm fillers) offered patients drops to reduce eye pressure called Lumigan, in which the active substance was the same bimatoprost, but in a lower concentration. And then something amazing began.

History of appearance

Age leaves its mark on faces and eyes: the iris turns pale, eyelashes become thinner, shortened, and even fall out, leaving bald spots on the eyelid. But patients who used Lumigan for a long time began to grow healthy, thick, dark and long eyelashes after some time. Pharmacologists were initially discouraged by this fact, because the drops were therapeutic and at the same time had a lot of side effects.

After some time, Allergan returned to Lumigan again and adapted it to the needs of cosmetology, writing impressive instructions. Inexpensive Lumigan was often bought for cosmetic purposes instead of Latisse; as a result, the drug disappeared from public and pharmacy circulation. Today it is a very popular drug with a proven effect of eyelash growth in the following parameters:

  • Eyelashes became thicker in 80% of respondents.
  • 25% noted a significant increase in eyelash length.
  • Noticeable thickening and darkening of hairs in 18% of cases.

The history of the creation of Latisse for eyelashes (Latisse)

The drug Latisse for eyelash growth is the latest development, which has recently appeared on the public market. The history of the creation of the medicine is interesting. Initially, a similar drug was used in ophthalmology to treat glaucoma. During therapy, patients began to notice an amazing side effect, which manifested itself as increased eyelash growth. They became so long, strong and thick that they felt like fake ones. Of course, such a pleasant “bonus” from using the medication could not go unnoticed. As a result, cosmetologists, together with pharmacists, finalized the drug, focusing it on aesthetic purposes.

Bimatoprost and prostaglandins

This main active ingredient is often used in eyelash growth serums, which have proven effectiveness.

Sometimes it is hidden under the wording “pink coral extracts/extracts,” but this is just a marketing ploy; such extracts simply do not exist.

Prostaglandins, namely bimatoprost, are compounds of fatty acids that exist in the body of every person. Their oxidation releases the structures of substances that promote some metabolic processes and inhibit others.

Bimatoprost is an artificially synthesized product similar to the natural one. However, its high concentration can have its own effects:

  • medical – decreased blood pressure, eye pain and vision changes,
  • cosmetic – improving the thickness and lifespan of eyelashes.

Application

The kit includes a 3 ml bottle of 0.03% solution and 60 disposable sterile applicator brushes. The drug lasts for about 1 month of use.

The manufacturer recommends applying the product to cleansed skin of the upper eyelid along the eyelash line so as to moisten the skin, but avoid contact with the mucous membrane of the eye.

Before application, you need to remove your contact lenses, and the procedure is enough once a day (it’s more convenient to do this before bed) and only on the upper eyelid.

The instructions describe in great detail how to use the growth activator:

  • Apply 1 drop of serum to a disposable brush,
  • pass it over the clean eyelid of one eye,
  • throw away the brush.

For the other eye, use a new applicator from the set and also discard it after one use.

The tip of the bottle should not come into contact with other non-sterile surfaces (skin, other brushes) to prevent bacteria from entering the solution.

The manufacturer was unable to fully understand and explain the effect of the drug; bimatoprost is absorbed into the blood and binds to proteins in the blood plasma; after oxidation and breakdown (absorption) of the substance, it is excreted from the body.

The content of the active substance (only 0.03%) is lower than that of medicinal eye drops, and therefore should not cause serious problems during preventive course use.

With long-term use, side effects cannot be ruled out.

Therefore, you must warn your doctor (ophthalmologist, therapist) that you are using eyelash serum with bimatoprost, especially if you are at risk.

Latisse (Latisse)

Taking care of yourself and your body is an integral part of every woman’s life. Therefore, drugs that make a woman more attractive will always be in constant demand. One of these eternal women's problems is increasing the volume of eyelashes. There are many drugs that can achieve this result. However, not all of them are equally effective and, most importantly, safe.

The Allergan company, which produced a remedy for glaucoma, at some stage began to receive information from its customers that the product also helps strengthen and increase the volume of eyelashes. Having carefully studied this side effect, the company developed a new drug based on the previous remedy, which it called Latisse. The active basis of the new drug is the fatty acid Bimatoprost, contained in every cell of the human body, which, penetrating into the eyelash tissue, enhances the nutrition of the eyelash bulb, improves its blood supply and helps to increase the eyelash tissue in volume up to 100%. The eyelash not only becomes denser and stronger. It adds significant length, which is especially appreciated by the fair sex. Many reviews about the drug Latisse speak of very specific results from using the drug, according to which the length of the eyelash increased by up to 30%.

However, the drug has one drawback. If you stop using it, all results are neutralized and the volume of eyelashes returns to their original state. This can be overcome by using the drug constantly, which is by no means prohibited. In any case, there are no medical contraindications to such use.

The mechanism of action of the active substance of the drug on the roots of the eyelash bulb suggests obtaining exactly the same effect if it is applied to the hair follicles of the head or, for example, eyebrows. As practice has shown, indeed, this remedy can be quite effective in improving the quality of hair in the above-mentioned areas of the human body. In any case, there are such cases, and they are not isolated.

When using the product, you need to pay attention to the following point. When particles of the substance get on the surface of the eyeball, redness forms on the latter, and the skin under the eye itself swells. In addition, an increase in intraocular pressure is possible. Therefore, the drug should be used carefully, and it should be applied exclusively to the eyelashes.

Despite the fact that in Western countries the drug is fully certified and approved for sale, it is impossible to buy Latisse in the Russian Federation and most CIS countries. At least in a legal way. This, however, does not exclude the possibility of purchasing the drug via the Internet in one of the countries where it is approved for sale. The cost of the drug is quite high. In online stores in the USA or Europe, it can be purchased for at least $100. Resellers in the CIS are even more expensive. In addition, you can end up with a low-quality fake. However, you don’t have to buy the original expensive drug. You can buy an analogue of Latisse under the name Careprost. This generic, produced by Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers, has similar properties, contains a similar active substance and, at the same time, has a significantly lower cost compared to the original.

Limitations and Side Effects

Allergan warns that some components of the solution may cause allergies. Serum cannot be used

  • pregnant and lactating women,
  • people with impaired vision, metabolism (diabetes mellitus), kidney function (nephropathy),
  • hypertensive patients
  • The activator should not be used by children and adolescents.

Side effects of bimatoprost are not so harmless; they occur in 4% of cases of correct use:

  • redness of the eye, eyelid, mucous membrane,
  • sensation of itching, dryness, increased tearfulness of the eye,
  • the appearance of a dark “colored” strip in the area where the solution is applied.

If the serum gets into the eye, the unwanted effects may be more serious:

  • impairment of visibility and quality of vision,
  • inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye,
  • pus and watery eyes,
  • the appearance of pain, sensation of a foreign body in the eye,
  • cataract,
  • migraine, low blood pressure,
  • change in the color of the iris and the appearance of a colored ring around it,
  • photophobia,
  • infectious inflammation.

Given such an impressive list of possible problems and violations, drops must be used with great caution.

In case of severe eye sensitivity and vision diseases, the serum should not be used without the consent of an ophthalmologist. Who wants to be in the 4% of sad statistics?

Latisse reviews and recommendations from doctors and cosmetologists

Latisse reviews can be read not only from those who use the product directly. Specialists (doctors, cosmetologists) who directly work with the results of using the serum also leave their opinions.

Irina Koshkina, cosmetologist

After using Latisse, girls often switch over time to cheaper analogues of eyelash growth products, which is completely wrong. As a result, you get a lot of side effects and nothing good. The disastrous results of counterfeits and

Cheap medications can only be corrected in the future with expensive salon procedures. Therefore, as they say, the miser pays twice.

The most important information contained in the reviews says approximately the following: beautiful eyelashes and eyebrows that have grown with the help of bimatoprost actually last a little longer than those obtained by other methods. But as soon as they fall out, then new eyelashes will appear with the usual length, which are not distinguished by any grace at all.

I warn you to adhere to all necessary hygiene standards if you use Latisse serum. The bottle comes with applicators and you only need to use one for one eyelid at a time.

Ksenia Semochko, ophthalmologist

I advise you to use the product only for its intended purpose. But new trends are making themselves felt, and women are actively using it to grow eyelashes and eyebrows. Today, bimatoprost is the basis of a number of drugs that are widely used to improve the health and condition of eyelashes. Such use is not excluded, and indeed, tests have proven that Latisse gives the desired results in this field. Course treatment of hypotrichosis is the main direction of use of the drug. If you want to restore your eyelashes after mechanical damage, chemotherapy, or if they have become impoverished due to other diseases, I can even recommend this remedy as the safest.

To return the hairs to normal, you should smear the eyelashes along the growth line every day. It's best to do this at night. Be sure to wipe the skin from any remaining bimatoprost solution and make sure that the drops do not get into your eyes.

About analogues

Today, the cost of Latisse fluctuates around 4 thousand rubles; you can purchase the product via the Internet.

At the same time, this serum has many analogues, the action of which is also based on biamtoprost (Kareprost, Karelesh). These activators differ in the company and country of origin, price, and protection against counterfeiting.

One of the brightest competitors - Careprost - has a bad reputation precisely because of numerous counterfeits. Its low price (compared to Latisse) has a magical effect on female customers, and one can only sympathize with the unlucky owners of fakes. Nobody knows what exactly they bought and how safe it is for health.

Others are willing to pay a lot of money for the opportunity to flutter their lush eyelashes beautifully and languidly. But no one gives a 100% guarantee of the same effect (length + thickness + color), just remember the official statistics. Only 25% of those participating in the study noted the length of their eyelashes, and not “eyelashes became 25% longer.”

This is an important nuance that we often miss in pursuit of advertising slogans and the beauty of the girl on the banner.
