About the procedure
Cryomassage of the scalp
is a method of physiotherapy that activates metabolic and regenerative processes in skin tissues by exposure to low temperatures. Cryotherapy is actively used in cosmetology for facial and body skin care. It includes a number of techniques based on the therapeutic effects of cold. Trichologists recommend cryotherapy for the treatment of hair and scalp diseases.
The method of temperature exposure is safe and effective: under the influence of cold, a sharp narrowing and subsequent expansion of capillaries and blood vessels occurs, which ensures the flow of arterial blood to the scalp, improving the nutrition of its cells and, accordingly, the hair follicles.
What is the cryomassage method based on?
The main principle of the procedure is the cooling of soft tissues, without exceeding the limit of their cryo-stability, while the process of thermoregulation remains practically unchanged. When the body is affected by cold, it turns on two-phase protection.
During the procedure the following processes occur:
- Precapillary sphincters begin to contract, small blood vessels and arterioles narrow the lumen, blood viscosity increases and its flow slows down. Thanks to this, tissues consume less oxygen and nutrients, and metabolic processes slow down a little. This is necessary to retain heat in the tissues and reduce heat transfer.
- Next, a significant expansion of the precapillary sphincters occurs. This is facilitated by the neurohumoral and reflex formation in the tissues of many biological elements, which lead to vasodilation. This helps reduce muscle tone, the manifestation of the ascon reflex, and redness (hyperemia) of the skin. This reaction is needed to increase the flow of arterial blood, cleanse the body of bad metabolic products through active stimulation of venous blood and lymph.
The procedure allows you to significantly speed up the process of delivering nutrients and oxygen to tissues, heat generation and the metabolic process occur faster.
During the procedure, the patient begins to feel cold, which is gradually replaced by a burning sensation and slight tingling. The narrowing and dilation of blood vessels occurs, due to which useful elements more actively enter them, which helps to get rid of inflammatory processes and ischemia. At the same time, the tone of the vascular walls is strengthened. The process of blood circulation in the skin on the scalp, the process of sebum and sweating return to normal.
To restore hair growth, the key is to create stress on the hair follicles, which encourages their activation.
The regeneration of follicles and skin cells accelerates, dandruff and itching disappear, and the hair acquires a healthy shine.
Indications for cryomassage of the head
Cryomassage of the head can be carried out as an independent and very effective procedure to improve tissue respiration and activate metabolism in the affected area, or it can be prescribed in combination with other treatment methods.
A trichologist prescribes cryomassage procedures based on diagnostic test data. Cryomassage of the scalp can be recommended for:
- androgenetic alopecia,
- hair loss due to prolonged stress conditions,
- slow hair growth,
- oily seborrhea,
- hair loss due to strict dieting,
- increased sensitivity of the scalp,
- itching and dandruff.
Treatment of baldness with cryotherapy - what effect can be expected from the procedure?
Hair treatment with liquid nitrogen involves a specific course, consisting of several procedures that are carried out at a certain interval. It all depends on the severity of the disease, as well as on the individual characteristics of the person (skin and hair type). A trichologist will be able to select the optimal course, taking into account all the factors of the disease and the recommendations of a dermatologist.
The minimum course consists of 10–12 sessions, which are performed with an interval of one day after each procedure. Cryomassage of the head with liquid nitrogen is a quite affordable procedure, the average cost of which in the regions of the Russian Federation is 900–1000 rubles.

Comprehensive programs allow you to get sustainable, long-term results. Let's consider physiotherapeutic treatment methods.
Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis is a procedure in which drugs are introduced into the deep layers of the skin. The introduction is carried out under the influence of constant galvanic current.
Iontophoretic effects accelerate subcutaneous blood circulation, stimulate cell division and metabolism in them.
In addition, iontophoresis facilitates the penetration of regulatory and nutrients to the hair follicles and skin cells, thereby strengthening the hair roots and enhancing their growth.
Electrical stimulation
Electrical stimulation (myostimulation) is the use of pulsed currents to restore the activity of tissues that have lost normal function.
The healing properties of electrical stimulation have been known for a long time, but only recently this method began to be used for the treatment and prevention of hair loss.
Pulsed currents affect the walls of large vessels, reserve capillaries open, metabolism is activated, and the combination of these factors helps to reduce the volume of fat cells and equalize hormonal levels.
Cryotherapy
The technique consists of freezing areas of the skin with liquid nitrogen. Freezing is carried out using a special applicator. As a rule, it is a wooden stick approximately 20-30 centimeters long. A small cotton swab treated with liquid nitrogen is fixed at its end.
Along with a wooden applicator with a cotton swab, a cryoapplicator in the form of a tube can be used. The tube is a reservoir filled with liquid nitrogen and equipped at the end with replaceable metal tips of various shapes, which are used for cryomassage.
The skin in the affected area is treated with a 70% alcohol solution before the procedure. Cryotherapy is used for many forms of alopecia, such as oily seborrhea of the scalp, alopecia alopecia and others.
Treatment with liquid nitrogen turns out to be especially effective when combined with common methods of influencing the body as a whole (general strengthening treatment, the use of vitamin therapy and others).
Liquid nitrogen mainly functions as a massage on the scalp. During this procedure, the applicator or cryotube is placed parallel to the surface of the skin and light rotational movements are applied to the scalp down the parting area for several seconds.
When the skin turns slightly blue, the procedure is interrupted. On average, one cryotherapy session takes 15-20 minutes. Cryotherapy is also used for alopecia areata. In this case, only the area of baldness is treated with liquid nitrogen with cyclic repetitions for 2-3 minutes.
The temperature properties of liquid nitrogen can negatively affect hair breakage and dryness, so you need to carefully monitor sebum production and other side effects.
The essence of this procedure is to expose a person to a modulated pulsed ultra-low electric current (from 40 to 1000 μA) with a frequency from 0.1 to 500 Hz.
The current has a pronounced effect and causes pleasant sensations. Currents are transmitted to the skin through special electrodes, which come in various types.
Most often, electrodes are found in the form of metal sticks, Velcro, or gloves (the massage therapist puts them on and performs a special massage).
Thanks to special parameters, microcurrents penetrate into the cells of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, improving metabolic processes in cells, stimulating the absorption and synthesis of useful substances, and the removal of metabolic products, accelerating the restoration of tissues and hair follicles. The procedure lasts from 10 to 40 minutes, depending on the specific case. The course is prescribed in 10-15 sessions with a repetition frequency of 2-3 days. If necessary, after 5-6 months, a repeat course is carried out.
Darsonvalization
It is the effect of small currents of high voltage with a frequency of 100 kHz on the skin.
It gives good results in the treatment of seborrheic alopecia, since Darsonval currents block the work of peripheral nerve endings and thereby promote the resorption of lymphocytic infiltrates.
In this case, the blood vessels expand, and the bulb receives more nutrition from the blood. The work of the sebaceous glands decreases. Thanks to spark discharges, ozone is produced and the scalp and hair follicles are saturated with oxygen.
Details of the procedure
The procedure is carried out using a wooden applicator, which the doctor dips in liquid nitrogen, and then performs acupressure on the scalp with quick movements.
The duration of a cryomassage session is only a few minutes (no more than 10). No special preparation is required for it; there is also no rehabilitation period. During the massage, the patient may experience a slight tingling sensation on the skin.
Typically, the cryomassage procedure for the head is carried out two to three times a week. The full course of treatment ranges from 10 to 15 sessions. The method is completely safe and there is no risk of skin damage.
Head massage with liquid nitrogen has an exfoliating and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, which promotes its rejuvenation, increases elasticity, and reduces the likelihood of pustule formation. In addition, it regulates the sebaceous and sweat glands, helping to normalize oily hair.
Cryomassage of the scalp
In most clinics and salons, cryomassage is performed with a special applicator made from a cotton swab rolled onto a wooden roller.
Progress of the procedure:
- Before starting the session, the hair is thoroughly combed and divided into partings.
- A cotton swab is dipped into a thermos containing liquid nitrogen. Then, without touching the skin, it is transferred locally or along certain lines to where the problem is. Depending on the cooling method and the severity of the problem, the procedure lasts from 3 to 15 minutes.
- Sometimes the method of targeted short-term application of a nitrogen swab is used. In this case, the specialist performs sharp, jerky movements. At first, a person feels a slight tingling sensation, which is replaced by pleasant warmth, satisfaction and relaxation. This method is mainly used to treat nest-type baldness. In this case, the effect of cold on the lesions does not exceed 2 minutes.
Side effects and complications
Unpleasant consequences, as a rule, appear when the patient himself undergoes the procedure ignoring contraindications or if the specialist does not adhere to technical rules.
When the technique is violated and a swab soaked in nitrogen is kept on a certain area for longer than the prescribed time, frostbite can occur.
If contraindications are ignored, complications may be associated with the patient’s underlying disease.
Cryomassage course for the scalp
This trichological procedure involves 10 to 15 procedures.
It is important to understand that for good effectiveness and noticeable results, you must complete the full course of treatment. Otherwise, there is no guarantee of a lasting therapeutic effect!
Cryomassage is recommended to be performed every 3 days. But even if you do it once every 7 days , the result will also be positive, but this affects the duration of the course itself.
results
After the cryomassage procedure, the patient feels a rush of warmth to the head due to active blood circulation.
After several procedures, hair loss decreases, and new vellus hairs gradually appear. The patient is no longer bothered by itchy skin and dandruff disappears. Cryomassage effectively reduces the manifestations of oily seborrhea, so the method can be recommended for the treatment of increased oily hair. Cryomassage of the head as a method of hair treatment is offered in many cosmetology clinics. Their list is presented on our portal.
