Azelaic acid has a number of effective properties:
- keratolytic . Slows down the formation of keratinocytes and thereby prevents the thickening of the outer layers of the skin, gives a head start to the pores, which begin to perform their functions well, and protects the skin from the formation of blackheads;
- antimicrobial. Eliminates harmful bacteria that provoke the formation of acne, and as a result, acne is successfully cured;
- antioxidant . Under the influence of acid, inflammation and red spots from acne disappear. It is successfully used to eliminate redness after rosacea, an inflammatory disease of the skin accompanied by pink pimples;
- smoothing _ Azelaic acid polishes rough skin elevations that appear as a result of inflammatory processes;
- brightening . It is able to eliminate various age spots, no matter what the nature of their occurrence. This acid can interrupt the synthesis of melanin and, as a result, lightens the skin;
- antiandrogenic . By suppressing the synthesis of the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to dehydroepiandrosterone.
Azelaic acid is used to treat many dermatological diseases. An ointment based on it can eliminate complicated eczema and seborrheic dermatitis. It also prevents hyperpigmentation by suppressing abnormal melanocytes. Zinerit is also actively used to treat acne. How to use Zenerit can be found in the article. Instructions for use against acne
In pharmacies, such acid can be purchased in bags with different packaging from 1 gram to 25. You can use it to prepare a medicinal cream that treats acne and pimples. But before purchasing a product, you should decide on its concentration. In large doses, the acid can cause redness of the skin and a slight burning sensation, which will pass over time, but the sensation will be unpleasant. The most commonly used is 20% azelaic acid. At this concentration it is the least toxic and its shelf life is long. Products based on it can be used by expectant mothers, as well as used by them during breastfeeding. After its application to the affected skin, it penetrates into the deep layers, and part of the substance is excreted unchanged through the kidneys.

To treat acne, many people buy ready-made preparations containing azelaic acid. But they are not cheap, and their effectiveness is sometimes questionable. Therefore, it is easier and more profitable to make cream at home.
To do this you will need the following components:
- acid powder;
- sucrose;
- Microkil (a preservative that extends the shelf life of the future cream);
- jojoba oil;
- water.
The video shows instructions for using azelaic acid:
How to prepare azelaine gel
Pour 16.5 ml of water into a prepared small glass container and dilute 1.5 ml of azelaic acid in it, whisking the resulting mixture. Then you need to introduce 1.5 ml of sucrose. At the same time, you need to prepare another glass container into which you need to pour 7 milliliters of essential oil (jojoba, rosemary or olive). Then the two containers should be heated in a water bath. After the sucrose has dissolved, you need to mix all the heated components until smooth. At the end you need to add one drop of Mikrokil.
The average price of the drug is 400 rubles.
If this process seems lengthy and costly, then you can dissolve a small amount of azelaic acid in alcohol, and then mix the resulting mixture with your daily cream. After using the first remedy, acne will practically go away in two months, the effect of the second recipe will be visible a little later. If you love making acne remedies at home, then you can also try making an aspirin acne mask or a carrot face mask.
Stages of the procedure
All steps of the procedure must be performed exactly as indicated in the instructions. Before peeling, the skin must be carefully prepared to achieve maximum effectiveness. If the preparation is carried out incorrectly, it will negatively affect the skin.
Preparing for peeling:
- First of all, you need to visit a cosmetologist who will assess all existing problems, conduct a test for allergic reactions and select the right drug.
- After this, the doctor will plan a course of procedures: how often they need to be done and in what quantity.
- 5-7 days before the procedure, you need to start applying a cosmetic product to your facial skin that helps moisturize the skin. Such a product must contain AHA acids; they prepare the skin for contact with nonandioic acid.
If an allergy test was not carried out at an appointment with a cosmetologist, then you can do it yourself. To do this, you need to take a small amount of peeling agent and apply it to the elbow. If no discomfort appears at the application site, the drug can be used.
The procedure itself is divided into several stages:
- Removing makeup and cleansing the face of impurities. For this purpose, special lotions, tonics, and milk are used.
- Degreases the skin and completely neutralizes makeup remover. This is done using special preparations that contain glycolic acid. It evenly degreases the facial skin and promotes deeper penetration of acid particles into the epidermis.
- Provide protection to sensitive skin areas (around the eyes and lips). A special composition containing silicone particles is applied, which blocks the effect of peeling.
- Then the peeling agent is diluted with an antiseptic liquid. This mixture is applied to the skin using massage movements in a circle. The product must be completely absorbed. After this, the face is wiped with water and dried completely.
- At the final stage, a soothing agent is applied to the facial skin; it helps prevent the appearance of spider veins and moisturizes the skin well. The composition is washed off no earlier than 6 hours after the session.
On average, 1 course lasts from 5 to 10 procedures, each of which is carried out after a set break. All substances for such peeling are selected by a cosmetologist, and he prescribes the number of required sessions. You can repeat the full peeling course no earlier than six months later and only as directed by your doctor.
Application in cosmetology
The course of treatment and frequency of use of products with azelaic acid are prescribed by a dermatologist for each patient individually.
Its effect was clinically studied and as a result it was revealed that it does not affect reproductive function, therefore it can be used by pregnant women, but their dosage should be reduced.
The product is applied to prepared, cleansed skin and gently rubbed into the skin. They need to be lubricated twice a day. Improvements may occur within two weeks. The minimum course is two months. The acid is not addictive and has virtually no side effects, except for individual intolerance to its components. The timing of treatment and dosage must be strictly observed so that a relapse does not occur and the acne does not return.

Reviews
- Marina, 36 years old: “I had closed comedones for quite a long time. I began to catch myself thinking that I envy people who have ordinary pimples; at least they can squeeze them out. I didn’t know what to do until my friend told me about Azelaic acid. My response, like that of any sane person, is that you can voluntarily use acid on your face; acne is better than scars. But she told me everything in detail and advised me to ask a dermatologist about this product. I went to see him, and he wrote me a recipe for making a cream from this acid, which can be prepared at home. He also told me how to use it and prescribed a course of treatment for two months, and then how it goes. I made myself a cream for four months. I don’t know by what miracle, but now my skin has become clear and smooth without bumps. I am very pleased with this product. Don’t be immediately intimidated by the name “acid.” Use it with confidence, it will help get rid of acne forever.”
- Elvira, 26 years old: “I have “problem” skin, enlarged pores, redness, blackheads are visible on it, and besides, sometimes all this is accompanied by purulent pimples. That is, all to one. I read on the Internet that you can save yourself from a rash with tea tree oil and began to intensively wipe the skin with it several times a day, as a result I developed minor burns, which led to skin pigmentation. This was the last straw of my patience, and I went to see a doctor. She explained the situation and asked me to treat me with natural, or better yet, folk, but proven remedies. And he offered me a safe alternative in the form of Azelaic acid cream. Reasonably explaining to me that herbs are unlikely to cope with my advanced symptoms. I prepared the suggested cream and rubbed it in every day. There were no results. I began to doubt its effect, and again went to the doctor. He said that the product has a cumulative effect and it will definitely appear soon. Indeed, the first results appeared after two months. Pimples and red spots began to disappear. I forgot to mention blackheads. They disappeared literally two weeks later and don’t appear again.”
- Luda, 24 years old: “My story is banal. The birth of a child is likely for every woman, accompanied by some deviations. I was no exception. For as long as I can remember, I have never had acne, even in adolescence. And after giving birth, they covered the entire face. I came to a “quiet horror”. Having no experience in eliminating them, I used various drying cosmetics, wiped my face with lotion - everything was useless. One of my new friends, with whom we now walk in the park with our children, told me to buy Azelaic acid powder and, dissolving it in alcohol, add it to my face cream. I did so. The first application was unpleasant. My face began to itch and even turned red, I immediately started calling a friend, and she assured me that this was normal. After this I had trouble sleeping all night. Experiences and bad thoughts settled in my head, I decided to go to the dermatologist. But the next morning the itching went away, and along with it the redness. I finished my jar of cream in three months and got rid of acne. I hope forever. And if they appear again, now I will know how to get rid of them.”
Post-peeling care
Skin care after the procedure consists of the following:
- In the morning and evening, you need to wash your face with a cleanser; foam is best.
- The skin of the face needs to be constantly nourished; a light cream is perfect for this.
- Before going outside, apply sun protection cream to your skin. This action will prevent the appearance of age spots.
- Cosmetologists advise not to visit places with high air temperatures (baths, saunas) for 14 days after the procedure.
You should not use decorative cosmetics on your skin for 1 week after peeling. If the skin needs foundation, then it is better to use powder based on mineral components.
Proper care will help you get the maximum effect after the procedure. It will be possible to repeat the course of treatment after 6 months.
