What does micellar water consist of and how to use?

Micellar water is a unique cosmetic product that provides soft, gentle and high-quality cleansing of the skin of the face and eyelids. Initially, the product was created as an alternative to washing with hard tap water for French women and could only be purchased in pharmacies.

Today micellar water is the No. 1 product in the cleansing segment and is represented in the product range of many cosmetic brands.

Its purpose has expanded significantly; it simultaneously performs several tasks:

  • Removes makeup.
  • Cleanses the skin of impurities and sebum.
  • Additionally cares: softens, tones, moisturizes and mattifies.

The essential active component of micellar water is micelles. These are microcompounds that form surfactants (surfactants) at a certain concentration in water. They absorb impurities, particles of makeup, and sebum, removing them from the surface of the skin. In this case, the lipid balance of the surface is not disturbed.

Otherwise, the composition of products from different manufacturers may differ significantly.

For example, three types of surfactants are used as a base:

  • Natural, “green” surfactants
    - lauryl glucoside or cocoglucoside.
  • Poloxamers.
Artificial, harmless substances that provide particularly gentle care.
  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG).
A cheaper option, can cause dry skin, safe in a certain concentration. Therefore, cosmetologists recommend washing off this product.

Micellar solutions are distinguished according to skin types:

  • For all types, universal.
  • For sensitive skin.
  • For dry skin.
  • For oily and combination skin.

Various products can vary significantly in cost, relate to medicinal products and mass market products, and the products of a specific manufacturer have characteristic features.

Composition of micellar water

Micellar water may contain one of three components, which cleanses the skin.

Surfactant (surfactant) made from sugar or coconut oil. This type of micellar water removes dirt very effectively without causing any damage to the skin. As a rule, the micellar product label should contain cocoglucoside and laurglucoside.

The second substances are poloxamers. They are artificially created, but at the same time safe. Micellar water made from such substances does not irritate the skin and does not require rinsing. The marking contains the following inscriptions: - “poloxamer 184 or 407”.

But it is better to avoid micellar water based on polyethylene glycol, since it is a classic emulsifier and can cause dryness and irritation of the skin.

What are micelles?

Micelles are microscopic particles that are part of any chemical or cosmetic solution. Their structure consists of two parts: hydrophobic and hydrophilic. The former, when dissolved in water, combine with each other. As a result, a sphere is formed, the middle of which consists of hydrophobic elements. They attract dirt and remove makeup from the face. The outer part allows the micelle to dissolve freely in the liquid.

In fact, micelles are quite interesting particles that can be compared to a “tadpole”, whose head loves to eat all kinds of dirt, and whose tail loves cleanliness.

Micellar water: harm or benefit - tell me the truth, skin...

As we found out, the purpose of micellar water is to cleanse the skin while removing various impurities. Most often, the product is produced in the form of a liquid, less often - in the form of a gel or lotion, and recently on store shelves you can find napkins soaked in the active substance; they are very convenient for traveling.

The benefits of micellar water

  1. It has a delicate, soft effect, while really removing impurities and moisturizing the skin.
  2. A universal product because it is suitable for those with dry, inflamed skin. Also suitable for women of all ages.
  3. Suitable for removing makeup from the most delicate, sensitive areas of the face - eyes and lips. Does not irritate the mucous membranes, does not cause redness, and is suitable for people who use contact lenses.
  4. Many products contain panthenol, which has a regenerating effect that can heal damage to the skin.
  5. Eliminates oily shine, gives a real feeling of lightness, and does not clog pores.

The harm of micellar water

  1. It can cause allergies; micellar water itself is absolutely neutral, but allergies can be caused by essential oils or artificial fragrances added to the composition.
  2. Since in addition to micelles the substance contains preservatives, micellar water can cause irritation when used for a long time.
  3. In some cases, micellar water may leave a filmy feeling on the face.

The product has many more advantages, but all the disadvantages are most often associated with the poor quality composition of micellar water.

Reviews

  • Karina, 23 years old: “Micellar water from Nivea is my savior. The fact is that my profession requires constant travel around cities. Sometimes there is not enough time to drink tea, much less remove makeup. But my water always helps me out. Makeup is removed very quickly and effectively, without any irritation. After the procedure, I don’t wash my face or even apply cream. My skin looks fresh, well-groomed and soft.”
  • Christina, 28 years old : “For many years I have been looking for a product to cleanse my sensitive skin. I've tried a lot. Some were suitable for my skin type, but did not remove makeup well, while others were the opposite. Then I saw Nivea water in the store and decided to conduct the next experiment. Surprisingly, after applying the composition, my skin became clear, I did not have any manifestations of allergies or irritation. Using the product regularly."
  • Martha, 30 years old : “I decided to replace my cleansing gels with micellar water from Nivea. At first I didn’t really believe in its effectiveness. I wanted to experiment, but I was pleasantly surprised when all the makeup quickly disappeared from my face, and my skin remained soft and velvety. From that moment on, I decided that there was no better skin care product."

Nivea micellar water is a unique product that has a triple effect: cleanses, removes makeup and tones. The composition of the product is completely safe, which allows it to be used by those with delicate and sensitive skin. In addition to Nivea water, on the shelves you can find Bioderma Sensibio micellar water, Garnier micellar water (reviews here), L'Oreal micellar water (description and price here), Clean Line (read the description), Bio Aqua micellar water (more details here). You can use Cynovit gel to wash your face (read the instructions).

Micellar water is harmful - how to choose and use correctly

We found out that when we come to the store, we look at the composition, and not at the brand. If your skin is prone to oiliness, frequent rashes and inflammation, then it is better to opt for surfactant-based micellar water: it tightens pores, reducing sebum production.

Girls with dry and sensitive skin are better off choosing products based on poloxamers: they are delicate and soft, do not require rinsing, and can be used several times a day. Products based on polyethylene glycol are the most budget-friendly, they can be used if your skin is not problematic and not prone to oily inflammation, and micellar water is only needed to remove makeup once a day.

The main thing is to remember to wash it off. The basic rule for all products is that they should not contain alcohol or soap. It’s good if the micellar contains moisturizing natural ingredients.

A cotton pad is moistened with the product and then wiped over the face, preferably moving along the massage lines. When removing eye makeup, a cotton pad is pressed against the eyelashes, and then drawn from the inner corner to the outer. No effort, no friction required. We do the same when removing lipstick from our lips. After micellar, you can use other care products, such as tonic.

Instead of micellar - effective recipes for homemade lotions

Classical. You will need: 100 ml of water, two tablespoons of coconut oil, two tablespoons of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (weak solution, no more than 9%), essential oils as desired. First, mix water and coconut oil, to do this, heat the mixture to a temperature of 45-50 degrees - in this case, the oil will dissolve very easily. Add apple cider vinegar or lemon juice (squeeze out the juice; using packaged acid is prohibited), and lastly add essential oil.

Suitable extracts include tangerine, tea tree or lavender. Mix the composition thoroughly. All components are combined and complement each other: coconut oil creates aroma, apple cider vinegar eliminates all bacteria and inflammation, and lemon juice evens out the complexion.

Cucumber lotion . Cucumber tones and cleanses the face well, but leaves a stickiness. The pulp of one cucumber is thoroughly crushed and mixed with a glass of milk (choose fat content from 2%). The composition is placed on low heat, simmered for 5-7 minutes, after it has cooled, carefully filtered through cheesecloth or a sieve. This lotion can be stored for no more than three days.

Oil composition . Who would have thought, but herbal oil perfectly cleanses and moisturizes the skin. For lotion, it is better to choose jojoba oil. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of oil with one capsule of vitamin E. Carefully pour the composition into a dark bottle. Jojoba oil deteriorates in light, this is worth remembering. The lotion removes makeup well, at the same time cleanses the skin and nourishes it.

Whether you use micellar water or not is up to you. If you decide to try it, follow the advice of cosmetologists, read the composition, if you need to wash off the micellar water, wash it off, then there will definitely be no harm. Write, comment, share your tips, reviews - what micellar product did you try, what effect did you get, with respect, Lyudmila.

Advantages and disadvantages

The micellar product has a number of advantages:

  • has a neutral level of acid-base balance;
  • is gentle on fabrics;
  • does not disturb the hydrolipid balance;
  • Suitable for everyday use.

Another significant advantage of micellar shampoos is the absence of silicones that weigh down the hair.
