How should you care for problem skin? Troubles such as acne, pimples, redness, pigmentation, and wrinkles can seriously ruin your life. And these are all signs of problematic skin.
And the only thing that every person with such problems wants is to get rid of them as soon as possible. But is this real?
Don't give up. There are many opportunities to achieve amazing and completely healthy skin. To do this, it is enough to have the desire and make a little effort.
Major skin problems
Let's first find out what are the signs of problem skin. If you have this type of skin, then you will encounter the following problems:
- comedones, acne, pimples occur frequently and increase in number;
- excessively oily and shiny skin;
- enlarged pores over the entire surface;
- frequent peeling;
- systematic irritation and redness;
- rosacea occurs - red vascular zones.
The causes of problems may include various factors:
- Disruption of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Disruptions in the endocrine system, etc.
It is also worth adding that poor nutrition and bad habits contribute to skin problems.
The listed and other points lead to the skin becoming excessively oily, which is a favorable environment for bacteria that cause pimples, ulcers, comedones, and blackheads.
Dry skin is often prone to peeling, irritation and redness. And after 25 years, the process of wrinkle formation begins.
But most often these problems haunt those who do not properly care for their face.
Top 5 most pressing questions about cleansing acne-prone skin
What could be simpler than cleansing your face, right? But when your skin has certain characteristics, say, acne-prone, then it is quite natural to ask questions about proper care for it. We've compiled answers to five frequently asked questions about cleansing acne-prone skin.
Which cleanser is best?
The choice of this type of cosmetics depends on many factors. Do you have a rash that is mostly non-inflammatory? Then choose a lotion or other product containing salicylic acid. It is a beta hydroxy acid that promotes rapid cell turnover and clears clogged pores. Inflamed acne responds best to products containing benzoyl peroxide. It actively affects bacteria that can cause acne.
If you are already using special medications to eliminate rashes, for example, Retin-A or Benzacline, then they should not be combined with a cleanser containing medicinal substances. It is best to use a milder drug, say, Cetaphil.
Whatever you choose, your skin should feel clean after using it and not tight, dry, itchy or red. If you still find it difficult to make the right decision, contact your dermatologist or cosmetologist, who will select the appropriate medications.
Can I use hard soap?
Some brands of bar soap are indeed suitable for cleansing the face. In particular, the composition of Dove and Neutrogena is quite gentle, so they are gentle on the skin without damaging it.
What you should avoid are antibacterial and deodorizing soaps. While they do a good job of cleaning tougher areas like the back or feet, these soaps can be drying on the face.
The pH level of the soap is equally important. Cleansers that have a high level of this index (extremely alkaline) can overly dry the skin and in some cases even irritate it. As a rule, it is recommended to use only cosmetics designed exclusively for cleansing facial skin. Such products provide a more gentle cleansing than soap intended for washing the entire body.
Do I need to use a sponge or special cleaning discs?
These items are not necessary for a good and thorough skin cleansing. It would seem that the harder you rub, the better the pores are cleaned. But if the acne is inflamed, this can only increase irritation of the skin.
It is best to thoroughly apply the cleanser onto your face using your fingertips and then rinse well.
If you have excessively oily skin or wear makeup on your face, then it is appropriate to “double cleanse”. First, apply the product to the skin, wash it off, and then repeat the previous steps again. For an enhanced effect, it is recommended to wait a little before washing the product off your face.
If you don’t want to give up washcloths or cleansing pads, then choose the softest and most non-abrasive of them.
What should the water temperature be?
Water at room temperature or slightly warmer is ideal for cleansing your facial skin. Many people are sure that hot water, like boiling water, opens pores, while ice water, on the contrary, closes them. In fact, this is not true, and such extremes can be harmful to the skin. Too hot water promotes rosacea (expansion or destruction of capillaries) and increases inflammatory processes.
To “close” the pores, cold water is not needed, because the pores are not doors, they do not open or close, and the temperature of the water does not matter here.
If you have enlarged pores, use cosmetics containing alpha hydroxy acid. These products remove dead skin cells and dry out oil plugs, making pores appear smaller. Light chemical peels, microdermabrasion (micro-resurfacing of the skin) and retinoids also visually reduce the size of pores.
How often should you cleanse your face?
Cleaning too often does not help your skin. After all, the epithelium needs a small amount of natural sebum to maintain healthy properties (and yes, fat can be beneficial). Otherwise, without natural lubrication, the skin becomes excessively dry and irritated.
As a rule, cleansing your facial skin twice a day is enough to remove excess oil, dirt and makeup without damaging the skin's epithelium. However, after exercise, heavy sweating or excessive soiling, such as gardening, additional cleaning is also appropriate.
It is extremely important to remember to wash your face before going to bed to clear your face of makeup, oil, and prepare it for the application of acne medications.
Caring for problem skin (10 important rules)
When caring for your skin, you should adhere to a number of basic rules, which, unfortunately, many people forget about. A step-by-step approach is important:
- When cleaning, you should not use aggressive agents or soap, which leave a film on the cover that does not allow the cover to breathe. For this purpose, gels and foams are provided that can penetrate deep into the pores and free the skin from residual dust, dirt, cosmetics, foundation, powder, etc.
- You should wash your face in the morning and evening. The water should not be at an aggressive temperature - 30-35 degrees is suitable, that is, at body temperature.
- You cannot dry yourself with a hard towel - it is best to blot your face with a napkin.
- For dry skin types, scrub once a week.
- You need to use a toner to maintain firmness and elasticity, choose according to the type of skin. You should carefully study the label on the bottle and use products only from trusted brands.
- The skin must be protected from the negative effects of ultraviolet rays; day creams are provided for this. The product protects not only from the harmful effects of rays, but also exhaust gases and dust.
- We must not forget about care at night. Despite the fact that we sleep, certain processes continue in the body, including our skin. It needs nourishment, relaxation and hydration. Therefore, before going to bed, you should cleanse the cover of any remaining makeup and dirt, use a tonic and moisturizer.
- Cosmetologists strongly recommend using masks made from natural healthy ingredients, carrying out the procedure 2-3 times a week.
- It is strictly forbidden to visit solariums or lie in the open sun for a long time. The negative effects of ultraviolet radiation can lead not only to pigmentation, dry skin, peeling, but also the formation of malignant tumors of an oncological nature.
- If pimples occur, you should not rub them, squeeze them out, and especially do not touch them with dirty hands. This is especially true for teenagers who squeeze out pimples on problem skin on their own and in places not intended for this.
Causes
Dry, problematic skin often appears at the age of 30. Its appearance may be caused by the following reasons:
- Incorrect care.
- Hereditary predisposition.
- Unbalanced diet.
- The influence of negative environmental factors.
- Age-related changes.
- Frequent stress.
- Dehydration of the body.
- Lack of vitamins B and A.
- Poor quality cosmetics.
- Frequently staying indoors with air conditioning running.
- Disruption of normal fat production by the sebaceous glands.
- Frequent facial peeling.
- Hormonal imbalance.
- Presence of parasites in the body.
- Abuse of tanning and solarium.
- Diabetes.
- Psoriasis.
Important nuances that not everyone knows about
Sometimes problems such as acne and comedones appear due to simple things. First of all, this is non-compliance with the above rules. Many people know about them, but not everyone adheres to them.
In addition, there are some nuances that few people pay attention to:
- Use of matting wipes. People with problem skin often develop an oily sheen on their face throughout the day. It doesn't look very nice. What do women do? They often use compact powder. Yes, the face looks beautiful, but this is only a disguise of the sebum that has stood out. But special wipes remove it, but do not spoil the makeup. As a result, there is no reason for bacteria to develop.
- Contamination from your own hair. It may not be strange, but our hair is a source of dirt. They accumulate dust, pollution, and the negative influence of the external environment (for example, gas exhausts). This happens even if you wash your hair daily. That is why those with problem skin should make sure that their hair does not touch their face again. That's why many cosmetologists advise removing bangs. Even the balms that we use to make our hair beautiful are harmful to the skin of our face, as they clog the pores. This often causes acne to appear on the back. If you wash in the shower, first use the balm, and only then apply the gel to your body.
- Personal items. Considering the above, we can conclude that hats, scarves and anything that touches the skin can contaminate it. So make sure to wash these items more often. This also applies to the pillowcase.
- Applying makeup. Many people use special sponges to apply foundation, and apply powder with a brush. These things also need to be cleaned periodically. It is recommended not to apply cosmetics to your face using testers in a store, because other people have used them before you and may have applied powder to dirty hands.
Can mineral cosmetics clear up acne?
Mineral cosmetics are one of the most popular products on the market. Manufacturers advertise it as a more natural and gentle variety of makeup products that will not cause irritation for skin diseases such as eczema, rosacea, and acne.
But using mineral cosmetics alone is not enough to get rid of acne, especially since they are not intended for this purpose. But this does not mean that this type of cosmetic product does not have its advantages. In particular, its supporters claim that, unlike traditional cosmetics, there are no fragrances, preservatives, or other ingredients that can cause problems for people with sensitive skin.
In addition, almost any mineral cosmetics contains ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which have anti-inflammatory properties; these substances also cope well with irritation and counteract the harmful effects of sunlight. It’s not for nothing that zinc oxide is the main active ingredient in baby balm for burns.
Some skin care experts claim that mineral makeup is nothing more than a beauty industry marketing gimmick. No real research confirms that this type of product has any effect on acne.
Most mineral cosmetics are non-comedogenic and do not tend to clog pores or worsen acne. However, some brands use bismuth oxychloride in their products, which can cause skin irritation. Therefore, do not forget to read the list of ingredients of the product you are purchasing. If your acne is somehow related to the cosmetics you already use (cosmetics that cause acne are called comedogenic), then switching to mineral products will bring you relief. But for the vast majority of people, such a step will not affect the condition of the rash in any way.
You like mineral cosmetics - use them for your pleasure, but don’t expect that they will have any significant effect on acne. For this purpose, it is better to use special medications.

As a result, I came to the conclusion that you just need to cure acne, and then choose a treatment so that it does not appear. Based on my skin type, the dermatologist recommended me retinoic ointment, which is aimed specifically at eliminating the causes of acne. As a result of a month of treatment, my facial skin improved.

Daily care
To get rid of the troubles that problem skin leads to, you need to carry out certain facial care activities every day.
In the morning you need:
- Using gel or foam for the appropriate skin type, cleanse your face.
- Next comes the toning stage. To do this, wipe the surface of the skin with tonic.
- After this, the epidermis needs intensive nutrition, so apply serum to the skin. Afterwards, moisturize your skin with cream.
- Only after such actions can you apply decorative cosmetics.
Remember that waste products from skin cells accumulate on your skin overnight. If you don’t cleanse the surface of your face and start applying cream or foundation, your pores will only become clogged.
In the evening, you should do the following:
- Cleanse your face using foam and special products.
- Using special brushes, massage. Periodically at this stage it is worth doing scrubbing, peeling, applying masks (a couple of times a week).
- The next stage is toning. Just like in the morning, use tonics.
- Next, feed your diet using whey or other oil-free products.
- Finally, you should apply night cream. Don't forget the area around your eyes.
Makeup Features
If you apply decorative cosmetics to oily skin at home, you may notice that it blurs over time. To extend the durability of your makeup, you must follow some rules:
- Look for salicylic acid in foundations and primers.
- Makeup for problematic facial skin is applied after complete cleansing.
- To make sure your highlighter and blush lasts long, combine dry and wet makeup. For example, apply similar dry ones on top of cream blush.
- In order not to focus attention on comedones and enlarged pores, do not use radiant textures in these places.
Procedures for caring for problem skin (6 options)
Working on your appearance should never stop. We are talking about a comprehensive approach to prevent the appearance of blackheads, acne, pimples, wrinkles, etc.
Of course, home care is important. But if you really want to get rid of acne, acne and other blemishes that cause problematic skin, you should pay attention to professional procedures.
Mechanical cleaning
Some cosmetologists are quite aggressive about the mechanical type of cleansing, believing that this injures the skin and leads to inflammation.
But the procedure continues to be popular and there is a reason for this: after cleaning, the result is immediately visible - there are no pimples, ulcers, blackheads or blackheads.
The mechanical cleaning procedure consists of 3 stages:
- cleansing;
- steaming;
- cleaning pores and relieving inflammation.
This type of cleaning involves physical squeezing of pus and impurities from the pores with hands or special instruments.
The method also has negative sides: the procedure is painful and actually causes injury. For this reason, experienced and qualified specialists must prescribe the use of anti-inflammatory and wound-healing sprays, gels or ointments.
To eliminate redness, white and blue clay and masks with aloe vera are used.
Ultrasonic cleaning
Manual, that is, mechanical cleaning has been replaced by ultrasonic cleaning. With the physical method, tips or “tails” remain in the pores, which then begin to become inflamed and lead to the formation of purulent pimples and their increase in number.
Moreover, the skin may be “tight” and cannot be processed manually, which will aggravate the problem rather than help get rid of it.
The ultrasonic method is recommended for everyone without exception and guarantees deep, complete cleaning of pores, after which there will be no problems. This is also facilitated by hardware sterilization of the skin, which gives a long-lasting and guaranteed result.
The second point indicating the superiority of the ultrasound procedure is the preservation of skin elasticity.
With constant squeezing, the pores become wide and noticeable. With hardware, there is no such effect, which allows you to use the method up to 1 time per month for oily skin, and up to 3 times a year for combination and dry skin.
Phototherapy
This method is suitable if you have not only pimples, acne or blackheads, but also enlarged pores. We can say that this is one of the best and most gentle procedures, the course of which includes up to ten or more sessions.
The results of the impact are more than noticeable - there are no scars left from pimples and blackheads, the skin is evened out in a matter of days, the color improves.
The principle of operation is simple - due to photo flashes, bacteria, the main culprits of inflammation and acne, are destroyed. The method is excellent for teenagers suffering from hormonal changes leading to a purulent inflammatory process.
In addition to excellent results in treating acne, phototherapy has other benefits.
According to reviews from both specialists and their clients, the brightness of freckles decreases and rosacea is eliminated. The procedure leaves no injuries and is absolutely painless. The only negative is the high price.
Advice from cosmetologists: after phototherapy, it is not recommended to appear in the open sun and try to avoid direct rays for about 15 days. For this reason, it is better to conduct sessions in autumn or winter.
For protection, you should use a cream that protects from ultraviolet radiation and a moisturizer.
Chemical peeling
A procedure based on the use of fruit acids is another great way to tidy up problematic facial skin.
Depending on the depth of exposure, the recovery period will differ. After the procedure, you may observe slight redness, which disappears after a couple of hours. But there are peelings, after which the face becomes covered with a film that gradually peels off.
The chemical procedure promotes regeneration, that is, renewal of skin cells. Activates blood flow, regulates the functioning of sebaceous secretions.
After the session, it is better to abstain from ultraviolet radiation for 5-6 days and use moisturizers and sunscreens. In addition, many peels cannot be performed during active sun exposure.
Biodermabrasion
This method can also be called peeling, which combines two types - chemical and mechanical cleaning. The lengthy procedure is carried out in several stages:
- cleansing;
- light peeling – preparatory;
- steaming;
- peeling – mechanical;
- applying a soothing cream and mask.
By cleansing we mean washing and removing remnants of cosmetics. Then a soft, gentle peeling is performed, with the help of which the skin becomes more receptive to the procedure.
Next is the use of products to activate blood flow, creams for steaming pores and mechanical cleaning with a special paste. The product penetrates deeply into the pores, cleanses of toxins and increases blood circulation, normalizes the functioning of the glands.
The biodermabrasion procedure does not cause injury, so there is no inflammation or redness after its use. The main thing is to use the same moisturizers and sunscreens.
Laser cleaning
The most determined fighters against blackheads, inflammation and redness of the skin dare to use this option. The procedure really works wonders on the cover.
After the hardware treatment, it becomes smooth, any problems are eliminated and no traces of former acne, acne and scars remain. Moreover, renewed skin gets rid of fine wrinkles.
The operating principle is as follows: the laser burns small points, the area around which begins to renew.
It is worth understanding that such a miraculous procedure requires considerable expenses, but it is worth it! After the session, you will have to stay at home for several days and not go out into the open sun.
To heal the skin, the cosmetologist prescribes a special product - cream, solution, gel or ointment. The cover is completely restored in 2-3 weeks.
Fractional laser
An option for the brave and desperate - those who have already tried a lot in the fight against blackheads, unevenness and inflammation and are ready to take a decisive step. After a hardware procedure with a fractional laser, the skin will be renewed in the literal sense of the word - no unevenness, acne marks, comedones and other troubles, including small expression wrinkles and small scars, only smooth and clean skin. But you will have to “pay” for such a result in full, and not with money.
After the laser, it is better to stay at home for several days, as the upper layers of the skin will peel off intensively - which means tightness, redness, a “crusty” feeling and the need to smear the face with cream every hour and a half. During the recovery period, you should not take risks and use ordinary cosmetics - the cosmetologist will prescribe a medicinal cream and a special solution, which should be used. A couple of weeks after the laser, the skin will have recovered, but some slight peeling may remain - cream for dry and very dry skin Avene Cold Cream and super-moisturizing mask Hydra 24+ Baume-En-Masque from Payot will help get rid of them.
The fractional laser works in the following way: it seems to “burn” many small holes in the skin, around which the regeneration process begins. The procedure costs from 15,000 to 30,000 rubles.
Avene Cold Cream for dry skin (RUB 850); super moisturizing mask Hydra 24 + Baume-En-Masque from Payot (RUB 1,700)
Question answer
It is impossible to accurately answer this question. Firstly, you need to approach the problem comprehensively. Secondly, in one case, laser cleaning is better, and in another, ultrasonic cleaning. It is worth consulting with a good specialist.
Of course, the skin needs hydration, even if acne appears on it regularly. To do this, use special lotions, creams, gels.
A doctor can help you with this matter. The point is that you need to assess the condition of the patient’s skin, the problems that exist. In addition, you need to understand that frequent cleaning is also not beneficial.
Prevention of facial skin problems
During and after treatment, it is important to remember that touching your face with your hands is prohibited to avoid infection. Your skin will remain clear if you adhere to the following preventive measures:
- wash with warm water (20–22°C);
- carefully remove makeup at night;
- use cleansing gel every morning;
- do not buy scrubs with too large abrasive particles;
- Before applying the cream, refresh the epidermis with tonic;
- During the day, remove oily shine with matting wipes.

I would like to draw attention to such a problem as hyperkeratosis. This is a condition where the skin thickens and does not exfoliate well. Ultimately, an inflammatory process appears and the facial relief suffers. In this case, you should not forget about exfoliants that eliminate dead cells. Sometimes your doctor may prescribe retinoids.

You shouldn't wash your face often.
Frequent water procedures only increase the production of sebum, which will ultimately lead to acne and other problems. Be gentle with your skin, don't rub it with a towel. Make masks periodically, and leave the squeezing out of acne to a cosmetologist. Recipes for home use and procedures are an important point in the fight for beauty and youth. But we should not forget about other, no less serious issues relating to the condition of the skin and the body as a whole.
An active lifestyle, proper nutrition, normal sleep, plenty of fluids and positive emotions are required.
As for the latter, there is scientific justification for saying so. Hormones of joy, happiness and pleasure, when stimulated, delay age-related changes and preserve youth.
Main causes and pathogens of acne
Problematic and acne-prone skin is a very common skin condition that usually develops during puberty, when boys and girls experience major hormonal changes. Hormones called androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum than is actually necessary (seborrhea). Seborrhea can also interfere with the skin's normal exfoliation.
When the skin produces excess sebum and is not sufficiently shed of dead skin cells, they can accumulate in the hair follicles and form soft plugs. These plugs can cause the follicle wall to bulge and form a whitehead, or the plug can open to the surface of the skin and darken, resulting in a blackhead.
Pimples (papules or pustules) are raised red patches of skin with a white dot in the center that develop when blocked hair follicles become inflamed or infected. Their blockage and inflammation, which develops deep in the sebaceous gland tissue, causes swelling to form under the surface of the skin, which is called cysts.
Problematic skin is most common on the face, shoulders, chest and back, as these areas produce the most sebum.
Seborrhea
Microbial colonization
Teenagers especially should pay attention to daily care of their skin, which is most prone to acne at this age.
Hormones . Although problematic and acne-prone skin is most common among teenagers, it is increasingly common among adults, especially women who experience hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or as a result of variable hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome.
Bacteria . Acne-prone skin tends to be quite oily as a result of excess sebum secretion. This creates conditions for the overgrowth of normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin. They cause irritation and inflammation in enlarged sebaceous glands.
Normally harmless acne bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) can grow due to excessive sebum production.
Genetics. There is some evidence that genetic predisposition plays a significant role in the development of acne. If both parents suffered from acne during adolescence, then there is a high chance that their children will also develop acne. Also, if the parents suffered from acne as adults, the child will most likely also have this problem.
